Movie Review: Mama (2013)

Whenever my cousin comes over, we’d have horror movie nights where we would just watch any scary movies we can find and scare the living crap out of ourselves and make it really difficult for us to sleep , and it’s become this ritual almost, only it doesn’t involve human sacrifice or anything, just plain-old scary fun. One night, he went over and told me about this movie called Mama and being a horror movie junkie, I was slightly embarrassed that I hadn’t heard of it before. As it turned out, my favorite director, Guillermo Del Toro, was executive producer of the movie and I absolutely loved The Orphanage and liked, to some extent, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, so I’d decided that I had to see it. In the middle of it all, he also told me to watch this short film that the movie was based on and I told him sure because I’m obsessed with short films as well, so I turned off all the lights, put on my headphones, and pressed play.

I think I gave myself a small heart-attack and I almost needed a new netbook, but after seeing the short, I was completely sold. I needed to watch this movie.

So yesterday, I went to go see it and I’m very happy to say that it exceeded all of my expectations.

First of all, this movie is marketed as a horror movie, and of course, it’s scary and disturbing and all that good stuff, but at its core, this movie is depressing as hell. Seriously, I left the theater feeling more sad than scared, but that doesn’t mean that it didn’t do its job, because it did, wonderfully. The premise is simple enough, and Muscietti transformed his short film into one filled with haunting beauty and a dark, almost claustrophobic atmosphere, which I very much enjoyed.

One of the strongest points of the movie is the visual direction, and I was pleased to experience it first on a large movie screen because I got to see the tiny little details that makes it absolutely gorgeous. I’m one of those people who finds beauty in abandoned, desolate places like graveyards, decrepit houses, and old hospitals, and this movie capitalizes on its visual imagery very much, with dark corridors swallowed by creeping shadows and a run-down house distorted by age, and it’s reminiscent of Ringu and The Grudge with the sheer creepiness of some of the scenes.

Another great achievement in the visual department is making the character of Mama come to life. In the short film, we only get a small glimpse of her twisted silhouette, which, by the way, is enough to give me nightmares for a few days, but in the movie, we actually get to see her face in some of the scenes, see the way her bones crack and break into themselves as she advances, see the graceful way her hair falls around her like she’s swimming underwater. This combination makes her character very scary but also very beautiful in a dark, twisted way, and despite being CGI most of the time, it’s still a thrill to watch her move around whenever she pops out into the screen. Her movements also have similarities with Kayako from Ju-On and Regan from The Exorcist, how she moves almost spider-like with sharp angles and quick, skittering movements. I guess that’s what makes this movie so beautiful—it’s not that it stole from these movies, but because it used the aspects that makes them so great and incorporated them into the story, and I thought that it was a very smart decision.

Visual imagery aside, one of the things that carried this movie was the acting. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau completely tore me apart in the beginning and, really, bless him and his beautiful face. Jessica Chastain absolutely shone in this movie, taking on the role of a rough-and-tough rocker chick with a heart of gold and completely immersing herself in the character. Her performance was consistently great from beginning to end and she’s definitely someone I’ll be watching out for from now on. The girls Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse also held their own, Megan showing exceptional growth in her character and Isabelle mastering the movements and behavior of a child raised in the wild. And a special shout out goes to Javier Botet for making Mama so freaking scary, and also because he played the Medeiros Girl from REC 2, which I loved as well.

Some cons for this movie include the pacing, which went too slow at parts for my tastes, and predictability, but they’re both easily overlooked when looking at the movie as a whole and are only a minor inconvenience that will vary from person to person and by no means should deter you from seeing this movie.

All in all, this is how a ghost story should be done—balancing horror with beauty and having a simple but effective story without losing out on performance or imagery. It’s definitely one of the prettier horror movies in recent times (and I know that pretty and horror don’t really belong in the same sentence but if you see this movie then you will know what I’m talking about) and it was a thrill to watch. If you like creepy atmospheres, great acting, and breathtaking visual imagery, then this movie is for you.

Movie Review: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2011)

I had been thoroughly interested in this movie ever since I discovered that it was produced by Guillermo del Toro. I love Guillermo so much it’s almost creepy and I feel like I should get a restraining order just because of what I might do to him if I ever see him.

Needless to say, while I didn’t love it, I very much enjoyed it.

It certainly has that fantastical, very otherworldy Guillermo touch that I adore, especially the garden and the mural/drawings and the fact that the fairfolk were, in reality, very vile, hideous little creatures despite how they’re depicted in modern media. I was saying all throughout the movie (which I had just watched with my cousins about an hour ago) that it was all in Sally’s head, that none of it was actually happening and she was doing everything to herself, and I felt that it would have been a great plot twist in itself, but it’s just not Guillermo, you know? (Well, that depends on which perspective you want to view the entirety of Pan’s Labyrinth.) Anyway, I felt it was a very light horror movie because of the very little scares it had and that the audience wasn’t given enough time to warm up and be terrified of these creatures (they were seen way too frequently for my tastes to be mysterious and overall scary). It’s still very potent nightmare fuel though, I won’t lie, and I will most likely dig up an old nightlight just in case, if I ever sleep at all tonight. Another thing to add is it’s one of those “parents are oblivious until something bad happens and they finally believe that their daughter isn’t really crazy after all” movies, and, to be honest, I really wanted to do something very bad to the father about halfway through.

Bailee Madison shone in this movie, bless her heart. I really enjoyed watching her. Katie Holmes surprised me because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie of hers (I watched clips of the Batman movie she was in but that’s about it), but she was actually pretty good, and the scream she does at the end was one of the best screams I’ve heard in recent horror movie history.

To wrap it up, while it had its shortcomings, it was still very enjoyable to watch. If you want a solid story, good acting, an endearing little girl, and fairytale creatures (which sells any movie for me), then you won’t waste your time on this movie.

me and my cousin have been watching horror movies for the past week and idk why i haven’t been posting about it

anyway, tonight we saw A Perfect Getaway and Haute Tension (High Tension). both good movies but one definitely outshines the other: haute tension. it’s exactly what the title says, and really, it’s just a fun ride that gets your heart going and keeps you on your toes. a perfect getaway was okay, it’s that sort of movie where you keep second-guessing everything. everything.

Top 5 Horror Films

I just got finished watching The Haunting in Connecticut when my cousin and brother asked me what other horror movies they could watch that would scare the hell out of them. So out of all the sick and twisted movies I could think of, I narrowed it down to five, and these are by far the scariest movies I have ever seen in my entire life.

In no particular order:

1) The Fourth Kind: Okay, aliens are one of my favorite things in the world, and this movie perfectly captures my absolute greatest fear—abduction. The acting could use a facelift, but the story’s there. And when they whoosh into her fucking room, I saw my whole life flash before my eyes and I probably peed in my boxers a little. The premise is intriguing, the amount of scary was just enough to feed my nightmares for a whole two weeks, and Milla is always a plus.

2) Lake Mungo: This fucking movie. Okay, so this is a little-known gem outside of Australia, but it’s so well done it’s almost believable. Like seriously, it made me fear house intruders a million times more and it was definitely mentally scarring (at least for me). The story is beautiful, the amount of creepy is perfection, and I can’t bring myself to watch it again I just cannot I’d fucking lose every ounce of dignity I have left.

3) Films to Keep You Awake: The Baby’s Room: This one I just watched because it was on On Demand and I was really bored one night and I wasn’t tired yet. Figured, why the hell not? I swear, that decision has haunted me ever since. That was the first movie that made me shit myself, I completely lost every ounce of composure, and when I showed it to my mom, I thought her heart would stop. Okay, maybe that was a bit extreme, but it really has haunted me and it made me promise that my baby would sleep in the room with us even if it woke us up every two minutes. Great acting, great premise, delivers on scares, fuck baby monitors forever that shit is like an omen of death, and Leonor Watling is a beautiful human being. This film really does keep you awake.

4) Noroi: The Curse: This movie is both what’s wrong and what’s right about Japan. Whoever thinks of shit as scary as this is a twisted fuck and I will hunt him down and bear his children while he feeds me mangoes during my gestation period. I cannot with this movie. It is so well done—it’s believable and is one of the prime examples of mockumentaries done sickeningly right. What may seem like unrelated events just happening simultaneously is actually a well thought-out plot that ties everything together beautifully. This movie is nightmare fuel for weeks, solid acting and amazing use of camera techniques, flawless premise, that fucking mask needs to burn in Satan’s ass forever, and ectoplasmic worms will never be not funny to me.

5) Insidious: Perfect example of a good premise taking a sudden detour to Shitsville, but it’s not without its good, deliciously scary moments. The first half was flawless and made me fear for my life (I really don’t know why I watch these fucking movies all by myself), especially the window scene JESUS FUCKING CHRIST JUST KILL ME NOW. The second part I wish would just vanish from the face of the earth, it is just so fucking ridiculous. The first part is the saving grace of this movie—it was well done, the acting was solid, the dancing kid still creeps the living shit out of me, fuck him and fuck the window guy, and I’d lower my expectations when it hits the 1 hour mark.
